Why a medicine approved abroad is not automatically available in Indonesia

Regulatory approval applies to the jurisdiction that issued it. A medicine approved in one country may not have marketing authorization, availability, or payment coverage in Indonesia.

This is not news and not a medical review

Explains jurisdictional approval without naming a specific product or event.

Medical review status

This is a standing explainer, not breaking news and not a medical review. It has not been reviewed by a doctor and does not replace the explanation of the medical team caring for the patient. Not a diagnosis or final medical recommendation. Requires physician review.

Approval is local

Each country has its own regulator and review process. Approval in one country means that regulator approved use in that territory, not that the medicine is automatically available elsewhere.

Three separate questions

Approval, availability, and coverage are separate.

  • Approval: a regulator decision in one jurisdiction.
  • Availability: whether the medicine can actually be obtained at a facility.
  • Coverage: whether payment is covered by a payer or paid out of pocket.

Penjelasan visual

The EGFR journey after targeted therapy stops working

The sequence usually discussed when EGFR-targeted therapy no longer controls the disease. It covers tests and questions, not drug recommendations.

This diagram explains the sequence of assessment and discussion. It is not treatment advice or an eligibility decision.

Read the EGFR marker explainer
  1. An EGFR alteration is found

Recorded in the molecular report, not only in its conclusion.

  2. Targeted therapy is given

Including the start date, dose, and reason for changing treatment when relevant.

  3. The disease progresses

Assessed from imaging and the clinical condition by the treating doctor.

  4. Possible resistance mechanisms

For example C797S, MET, or another alteration that may be found on repeat testing.

  5. Repeat testing or NGS

Determines which changes are actually present in this case.

  6. Discuss the next step

Reviewed with the doctor according to the patient's condition and available options.

When targeted therapy stops working, it does not automatically mean there are no further options to discuss.

What to confirm

When reading approval news abroad, confirm whether the medicine has Indonesian authorization, whether the destination facility can provide it, and how payment coverage works.

Note about this explainer

This is a standing explainer for understanding a term, not news about a specific product or event.
