HER2 amplification
Increased HER2 copy number or high protein expression, discussed in stomach and breast cancer.
Parent marker: HER2
Not a diagnosis and not final medical advice. Must be reviewed by a doctor.
Clinical meaning
Positive HER2 status opens the category of anti-HER2 antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates. The assessment needs to follow the score applicable to the type of cancer concerned.
How this finding appears in a report
Assessed by immunohistochemistry and confirmed by in situ methods if the results are doubtful.
When therapy stops working
Loss of HER2 expression or alteration of downstream pathways may occur after therapy, so re-examination is sometimes discussed.
What needs verification
- Complete variant name as written in the laboratory report.
- Examination methods and types of samples used.
- Examination dates were compared with ongoing therapy.
Marker context: HER2
In gastric cancer, HER2 status is often assessed by immunohistochemistry and confirmed by other methods when the results are ambiguous. In lung cancer, HER2 mutations are discussed differently from HER2 amplification.
A negative result does not always mean absent
