Precision radiotherapy (IMRT and VMAT)
Intensity-modulated radiotherapy that shapes the dose to the tumour contour so surrounding healthy tissue is better protected.

Not a diagnosis and not final medical advice. Must be reviewed by a doctor.
What is it?
IMRT and VMAT are modern radiotherapy techniques that regulate the intensity and direction of the beam in multiple angles.
This approach is used when the tumor is close to an important organ, for example in head and neck, prostate, lung or pelvic cancer.
Planning requires imaging and determination of target contours by the radiation oncology team.
The radiation device changes the shape and intensity of the beam from many directions so that the dose is collected on the target with a lower dose to the surrounding tissue.
How it works
The radiation device changes the shape and intensity of the beam from many directions so that the dose is collected on the target with a lower dose to the surrounding tissue.
Position in the treatment pathway: Can be primary therapy for localized disease, adjunct therapy after surgery, or part of concomitant therapy with systemic drugs.

Which cancers is it usually discussed for?

Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is divided into non-small-cell and small-cell groups, and molecular markers strongly shape which treatment options are discussed.
Open cancer page
Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is classified mainly by hormone-receptor and HER2 status, and that classification determines the direction of systemic treatment.

Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer often causes symptoms only after it has spread, so a rapid and complete assessment determines the treatment choices.

Brain Cancer
Brain tumours cover many types with different behaviour, and molecular markers such as MGMT status affect how treatment is discussed.

Usually considered
- Targetable local or locally advanced disease.
- The need to protect important organs around the target.
Usually not a candidate
- Widespread disease.
- Conditions that make consistent positioning difficult.
What is the process like?
Preparation 1
Planning imaging (simulation).
Preparation 2
Immobilization device.
Preparation 3
Target contour marking.
Monitoring
Periodic evaluation during sessions.
All preparation
- Planning imaging (simulation).
- Immobilization device.
- Target contour marking.
All monitoring
- Periodic evaluation during sessions.
- Repeat imaging to assess response.
Risks and points to watch
Side-effect notes, not a complete list
- Fatigue and local reactions of the skin or mucosa may appear.
- Side effects depend on the area irradiated.
What needs to be checked?
Cost and access
Cost figures depend heavily on location, facility and payer. We do not show estimated figures on this page; what can be prepared first are the questions.
Providers and clinical trials
Access status not yet verified
NO DATA
No studies in the latest registry data mention this treatment category in their description.
Questions for the doctor
- What technique was used and why was it chosen?
- Which organs are protected in the dosing plan?
- What is the number of sessions and how are side effects monitored?
