BCR-ABL
Other names: Philadelphia chromosome, kromosom Philadelphia, BCR-ABL1
The BCR-ABL transcript is a defining marker in chronic myeloid leukemia and some acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Not a diagnosis and not final medical advice. Must be reviewed by a doctor.
Plain explanation
BCR-ABL is formed when two chromosomes exchange parts and produces a continuously active growth signal. This marker is found through blood or bone marrow examination.
Clinical meaning
The presence of BCR-ABL opens up a category of specific tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Transcript levels are also used to monitor the depth of response to therapy.
Testing methods
- BCR-ABL PCR
A molecular test that measures the BCR-ABL transcript and monitors response in certain leukemias.
- FISH (fluorescence in situ hybridisation)
A test that detects changes in the number or arrangement of genetic material in tumour cells.
- Next-generation sequencing (NGS)
A test that reads many genes from one tumour sample to find actionable changes.
A negative result does not always mean the marker is absent
Test sensitivity differs by sample type and method. Results need to be read together with the pathology report and clinical condition.
What needs verification
- The latest quantitative values and international scales used by laboratories.
- Time span of examination to read response trends.
- Whether additional changes were discovered that could influence the choice of inhibitor.
- Ask how these results change the monitoring plan.
