Standard treatment
Radiotherapy
Directed radiation used to kill or control cancer cells in a defined area.

Not a diagnosis and not final medical advice. Must be reviewed by a doctor.
What is it?
Radiotherapy may be given as primary therapy, before or after surgery, or to control symptoms.
Planning uses imaging so that the dose is directed at the tumor and as minimal as possible to healthy tissue.
The radiation beam is directed at the target area in a scheduled number of sessions.
How it works
The radiation beam is directed at the target area in a scheduled number of sessions. Planning is carried out by the radiation oncology team together with medical physicists.
Position in the treatment pathway: Can be at almost any point on the treatment pathway, depending on the goals and location of the disease.

Which cancers is it usually discussed for?

Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is divided into non-small-cell and small-cell groups, and molecular markers strongly shape which treatment options are discussed.
Open cancer page
Stomach Cancer
Stomach cancer is most often adenocarcinoma, and HER2, PD-L1, MSI/MMR and CLDN18.2 status can change which treatment options are discussed.
Open cancer page
Lymphoma
Lymphoma is a malignancy of the lymphatic system with many subtypes, and accurate pathological classification determines the direction of treatment.

Multiple Myeloma
Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of plasma cells in the bone marrow, with cytogenetic markers that matter when treatment strategy is considered.

Usually considered
- Diseases are limited to certain areas that can be targeted.
- Need for control of symptoms such as pain or bleeding.
- General conditions that allow daily sessions.
Usually not a candidate
- The spread of the disease is very wide and cannot be safely targeted.
- History of radiation in the same area where the tolerance limit has been reached.
What is the process like?
Preparation 1
Planning imaging (simulation).
Preparation 2
Consistent body position marking.
Monitoring
Periodic evaluation during the session.
All preparation
- Planning imaging (simulation).
- Consistent body position marking.
All monitoring
- Periodic evaluation during the session.
- Repeat imaging to assess response.
Risks and points to watch
Side-effect notes, not a complete list
- Side effects are generally limited to the irradiated area.
- Fatigue and skin reactions may appear.
- Long-term effects depend on the area and dose.
What needs to be checked?
Cost and access
Cost figures depend heavily on location, facility and payer. We do not show estimated figures on this page; what can be prepared first are the questions.
