BCMA
Other names: B-cell maturation antigen, TNFRSF17
BCMA is a marker on plasma cells and is the basis for several advanced therapies in multiple myeloma.

Not a diagnosis and not final medical advice. Must be reviewed by a doctor.
Plain explanation
BCMA is a protein that is found in many plasma cells, including myeloma cells. Therefore, this protein is used as a therapeutic target directed at these cells.
Clinical meaning
BCMA expression is a consideration in cellular therapy and bispecific antibodies for multiple myeloma that has undergone several lines of therapy.
Testing methods
- Immunohistochemistry (IHC)
A test that uses antibodies to mark specific proteins in tumour tissue.
- Flow cytometry
A test that rapidly measures cell-surface markers across many cells.
- Next-generation sequencing (NGS)
A test that reads many genes from one tumour sample to find actionable changes.
A negative result does not always mean the marker is absent
Test sensitivity differs by sample type and method. Results need to be read together with the pathology report and clinical condition.
What needs verification
- Had BCMA expression assessed in recent bone marrow samples.
- History of previous therapy, including whether you have received anti-BCMA therapy.
- Facility and program requirements for cellular or bispecific antibody therapy.
